HI AND WELCOME!
I’m Caroline Carroll, OTR/L
I’m an occupational therapist and mom of three kids. My focus is the care of babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and their caregivers.
My goal is to nurture the humanity in all individuals in order to create access to the magic of living a true, full life.
I APPROACH EACH CHILD, AND FAMILY, FROM A PLACE OF UNDERSTANDING AND COLLABORATION.
I’ve taken my experience as an OT, early childhood educator, Child Life Specialist, and mom to form a unique perspective.
Through this model, I aim to understand the individual as a whole and unlock magic that helps everyone live true, full lives.
A large part of being an OT is noticing. While working in hospitals and clinics, I noticed it was really challenging for the child’s progress to translate to other environments.
I also found myself having to focus goals on the child’s “problems” to “overcome” vs. focusing on the many strengths they already inhabited.
I DECIDED TO SHIFT MY OT APPROACH TO FOCUS ON OUR COMMUNITY’S NEEDS.
My current approach is to identify strengths, motivating factors, and interests that are specific to the individuals, and families, I work with.
I provide neurodiversity affirming practice using a strengths-based approach.
The connections made and results have been incredible!
Before I became an OT, I had a background in early childhood education and Child Life. I have always wanted to work directly with families to create change.
In 2012, I graduated from Columbia University with my masters in Occupational Therapy and started working in some world-renowned hospitals, alongside incredible practitioners. For 10 years, I soaked in truly best clinical practice in hospitals and outpatient clinics with clinicians that always kept my love of learning cup overflowing. I was fortunate, it was exciting, and patient results were amazing.
I became a mom (three times!) in the midst of a global pandemic. While navigating the systems we have in place I became discouraged, frustrated, and felt isolated.
Noticing is one of my superpowers. I continue to press pause to notice and understand what our society is missing while raising the next generation.
I HIGHLIGHTED THREE MAIN AREAS WHERE I COULD HELP ERASE BARRIERS.
Skilled care that is accessible and honors the families’ desires and strengths.
Building community that is built upon the importance of early childhood.
Support and care for all caregivers, especially mothers
I have not been able to stop imagining a world where we were able to do more to understand, and shine light on, the incredible and unique abilities of all individuals (starting at birth) while caring for our caregivers.
SO HERE I AM. AND THIS IS THE EVOLUTION OF MY OT PRACTICE.
I meet you exactly as you are. I work with babies, toddlers, and young children in their natural environment, a place that is familiar and comfortable.
I’ve met families in their homes, the local park, libraries, even the community pool. Sessions and clinical decision making are guided by identifying strengths, motivating factors, and interests that are all specific to the individuals I work with.
I provide neurodiversity affirming practice using a strengths-based approach with my background in using the DIR Model. Upon meeting every family, I ask the question “what are your deepest wishes for your child and for your life?” This becomes our guiding force.
I also now offer nature-based classes for young children and support for caregivers.
MY OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY PHILOSOPHY
Strengths-Based Approach
I started to dream of a way to maintain a strengths-based approach in an environment that would easily transfer skills, while including the child’s support system in therapeutic intervention in a way that felt authentic.
Child’s Natural Environment
I then knew therapy had to be in the child’s natural environment. This includes their home, their neighborhood playgrounds, the local pool.
Whole-Child Evaluation
I started to see immediate positive results with children and their families, By evaluating the whole child, in their comfortable environment, I could make small, manageable tweaks that are life changing.
I am so proud of the ever evolving work I do as an OT in our community.
I offer free 30 minute consultation calls to better understand if my skills would be of fit for your family’s needs. Please reach out to me directly. I look forward to hearing from you.
